Depending on the gender we primarily identify with, we disidentify with the other one to the same degree, it is abandoned into the subconscious, becomes part of our shadow self.
Gender is a continuum and the more consciously we implement one end of it into our self and persona, the more unconscious someone becomes of the other end.
In Jungian psychology the "Anima" is the female self that people who primarily identify as male have disidentified with and the "Animus" is the male self that people who primarily identify as female have disidentified with.
Jung described the Anima and Animus as attitudes, which influence a persons subjective relation to the outer and their inner world.
We always seek our missing half, our subconscious gender identity that we have disidentified with in the outside world - to complement and complete us.
That being said, the whole gender spectrum is theoretically available to anyone, we just identify more or less with different parts of it.
I'm not a fan of the strict black and white binary of gender and attraction when it comes to Mars and Venus in Astrology, but to make this easier, one could generally say that
- The Mars sign of a person who primarily identifies as male is the type of masculinity he identifies with and shows the way he acts when, for example, trying to conquer a romantic/sexual interest
- The Venus sign of a person who primarily identifies as male shows the femininity he disidentifies with, it shows his subconscious representation of idealized femininity (depending on the sign Venus is in) and therefore the type of woman he is attracted to
- The Venus sign of a person who primarily identifies as female shows the femininity she identifies with and shows the way she acts when, for example, trying to attract a romantic/sexual interest
- The Mars sign of a person who primarily identifies as female shows the masculinity she disidentified with, it shows her subconscious representation of idealized masculinity (depending on the sign Mars is in) and therefore the type of man she is attracted to
Other gender identities and sexual orientationsIn the case of people who neither identify as primarily male nor female or don't feel any sexual or romantic attraction, Mars merely shows the archetypal YANG energy of conquering, competetion, fight, aggression, drive and desire while Venus merely shows the archetypal YIN energy of love, pleasure, beauty, harmony, relating and compromising.
This does not really take into account bisexuals or homosexuals and I don't want to claim that there is a "man" and a "woman" in homosexual relationships... I think it can vary which of those planets you identify with or which one you are attracted to, depending on, for example, whether you are doing the conquering (mars) or whether you're the one being conquered (venus), whether it is romantic attraction (venus) or sexual attraction (mars) - it will most likely be a rather complex interplay.
It'd be cool to see some more astrological/psychological studies on that in the future or to have some of you share personal opinions and experiences?? :-)
I hope this made it more clear :-)
I will be writing blogposts on each placement soon!
